Whose Authority Are You Under?

The 15th chapter of the Gospel according to the apostle John is one of the most beautiful, in my opinion, chapters in the Bible. Yashua says, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.”

Yashua very clearly and eloquently says that only as you, meaning every person — Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female, again every person, abides in Him or gets their sustenance, life, power from Him are they able to bear fruit to the glory of YHVH. If we are not abiding in Him, He says we will not bear fruit.

“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.”

Could it be that the fellowship of believer’s in Yashua lack life-sustaining power because we are abiding in something other than Yashua? What’s your covering — who’s your authority — even the Pharisees of Yashua’s time were asking Him this question. Simple answer; YHVH Yashua is my covering, my authority. A “church” did not shed its blood for me; my spouse did not shed his blood upon a crucifixion stake, descending to the pit of hell and strip the keys from the enemy of the brethren for me. Only Yashua has done that for me and He says to abide in Him; to cover under His sheltering arms, to walk and talk in His authority. Mat 28:18-20, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.”

These words of Yashua tell me that only in Him do I bear fruit which is what Yashua told his disciples to do in Matthew 10:6-8, “…but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.”

If I take as my covering or authority any one or thing other than Yashua I am drawing sustenance from that other entity; I am not abiding in the vine of Yashua. Yashua’s roots are from before the foundation of the world, His living water flows from the throne of YHVH — He is YHVH! How deep are the roots of the “church” you attend or how deep are the roots of your spouse for that matter? I know someone is thinking, but they are attached to the vine which is Yashua and I am attached to them. Maybe!? What happens if they get looped off because they are not bearing good fruit, they are not walking in the commandments of YHVH, they are not expressing the love of Yashua to the world? Do you really want to be under someone or something’s covering/ authority other than Yashua?

“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.” An interesting note: “A significant discovery was made in relation to marital satisfaction and role relationships. 81% of egalitarian couples; the position being that men and women share identical authority and responsibility; believing that all believers without regard to gender, ethnicity, or class, must exercise their YHVH-given gifts with equal authority and equal responsibility in the church, home and the world; that 81% of these couples were happily married, while 82% of couples where both spouse perceived their relationship as traditional or hierarchical were mainly unhappy.” Hierarchical, or now known as “complementarian” view the genders as equal in worth, but not equal in role and opportunity. It is the men who will tell the woman what she can and can’t do. (About Women’s Ministries A Hebrew Roots Understanding of Women’s Roles, by Pat Anderson) From these statistics it would seem that women who are not allowed to BE all that YHVH created them to BE so that they might DO all that YHVH wants them to DO are not living satisfied, joyous lives in YHVH.

The church fathers promoted very demeaning views of women; unfortunately these views have permeated the attitudes of men toward women down through the ages and have strongly infiltrated the Hebraic roots movement; where in many circles women are viewed with the attitude of Martin Luther, leader of the Protestant movement; “Women should remain at home, sit still, keep house and bear and bring up children…If a woman grows weary and at last dies from childbearing, it matters not. Let her die from bearing, she is there to do it.” This very attitude toward women is also strongly reflected in Islam.

When women are demeaned, dismissed, and discounted it is difficult if not impossible for them to live in and to obey Yashua’s next words: “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. This I command you, that you love one another.” Husbands, (and “church” authorities) if you are demanding that your wife or daughter, (the women in your midst) go through you for her (their) connection to Yashua, you, in my opinion, are putting yourself in a precarious position by claiming to be the branch that she (they) must be grafted into for their sustenance. We, each one, are going to have to make account of our lives before the throne of YHVH. “What did you do with the gifts, talents and abilities I gave you?” He will ask each one of us. If your wife, or women in a “church” have to answer, “I know you gave me these gifts, talents and abilities, but I wasn’t allowed to use them to Your glory because of my husband’s belief or because of the authority of my church,” then YHVH is going to look to you and say, “Why did you not allow her to use the gifts, talents and abilities I gave her for My glory? Why did you not allow her to receive her sustenance from me? Surely you should have known that she can only be truly happy, and satisfied as she abides in Me! I created her equal with you, why have you made her less than my design for her?”

Yashua gave us everything we need to be a happy, joyous, productive people; abide in Me, He said. Abide directly in Him, not through someone or something else; get your daily sustenance from Him, do not be satisfied with second-hand nourishment. He is Bread; eat of Him and live. Drink of His living water and never thirst again.

So the next time someone asks you whose covering are you under or by whose authority do you do these things — look them in the eye, and say with great confidence, “Yashua’s of course!”
