Harp and Story

Daily Bread… Vayikra 3

I was sitting in congregation awhile back when YHVH brought the story of Elijah on Mount Carmel to mind. The life of Elijah has been of particular interest to me for several years so I was wondering when the Mount Carmel portion came to my mind what YHVH wanted to teach me. As I reviewed the story the instruction was not long in coming.

1Kings 18:22-29, Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. “Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it. “Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people said, “That is a good idea.” So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one ox for yourselves and prepare it first for you are many, and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.” Then they took the ox which was given them and they prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon saying, “O Baal, answer us.” But there was no voice and no one answered. And they leaped about the altar which they made. It came about at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened.” So they cried with a loud voice and cut themselves according to their custom with swords and lances until the blood gushed out on them. When midday was past, they raved until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice; but there was no voice, no one answered, and no one paid attention.

“My people worship me like the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.” The words were such a shock that I experienced an instant and intense rush of adrenaline flood through my body. “How can that be, Abba, they are worshiping you from a heart filled with praise.”

“Yes, they sing, they shout, they clap their hands, they beat their drums and strum their instruments, and they expect for their time and effort to get a response from heaven. But where is the repentance, where is the washing, the humble hearts, forgiveness, restitution; I want them to seek Me — My Face, but they only seek My Hand. They are unwilling to come out of Babylon and wash their robes in the blood of the Lamb. As long as they treat Me like Baal, I will not answer them.”

YHVH tells us to be holy as He is holy (Lev11:45) and the route to being holy as He is holy is found in 2Chron 7:14, “and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin…” then the words of Yashua to His disciples as He sent them out: “…go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:6-8) will become our reality.
